Rattling Exhaust

Broken baffle inside the muffler: A muffler contains baffles that help reduce the engine’s noise. If one of these baffles breaks off or becomes loose, it can rattle around inside the muffler and cause a noticeable noise.
Broken hanger: The exhaust system is typically held in place by several hangers that keep it from moving around. If one of these hangers breaks or becomes loose, the exhaust pipe may hang down and rattle against the car’s underside.
Catalytic converter: While less common, a loose or broken catalytic converter can also cause a rattling noise in the exhaust system. A damaged internal component, such as a loose honeycomb structure or a broken substrate, typically causes this.
Loose heat shields: Heat shields protect various components of the car from the high temperatures produced by the exhaust system. Over time these shields can become loose or damaged, causing them to rattle against the exhaust pipes.
